A JOURNEY THROUGH APPLE HISTORY: INFINITE MAC

Have you ever wanted to experience all the operating system versions that Apple has released throughout its history? All you need for that is a web browser.

When you visit the site called Infinite Mac, you can try all systems from MacOS 1.0 to System 9, the last of the Classic operating systems. Among the post-2001 systems, a few up to macOS X 10.4 (Tiger) have also found their place on Infinite Mac.

You can also experience NeXTSTEP and OpenStep, the operating systems of NeXT Computer — the company Steve Jobs founded after being ousted from Apple — through Infinite Mac. After Apple’s acquisition of NeXT in 1997, the technologies developed by NeXT automatically joined Apple’s ranks. The UNIX-based macOS we use today (originally named Mac OS X) also incorporates many software components and technologies from NeXTSTEP.

If you try one of the later versions of NeXTSTEP or OpenStep on Infinite Mac, you can see the similarities with today’s macOS. You can change the configuration to your liking before running any operating system. But if you have sneaky ideas like mine — such as “I’ll run MacOS 1.0 on a PowerMac G4” — let me tell you upfront: not every OS works with every hardware configuration.

Infinite Mac was created by a developer named Mihai Parparita. And if you would like to support the site, you can make a small donation by clicking the Donate link.
